CHAPTER SIX
âJOSH is fast asleep, whacked out with all that swimming, I think,â Dan said as he was coming through to the veranda from the sitting room. Anita watched him walking towards her with that easy gait, that loose athletic movement sheâd always admired. Her spirits, which had been on a high all morning, moved up another notch. She hadnât expected to find such exhilaration in her new life here. This new-found euphoria was totally transitory. She accepted that, but at this moment she was willing to face the let-down when it cameâ¦because it inevitably would if she embarked on a relationship with Dan again. She didnât even know how he stood with his ex-wife, or what would happen when Rachel arrived.
He sank down among the cushions beside her. She placed the large glass of icy water sheâd been drinking on to a small side table. Since arriving back from the beach a few minutes ago, sheâd simply been sitting still, recovering from the activities of the morning whilst enjoying the cool breeze from the fan above her head.
âYou promised me a bath to get rid of all this sand,â she said, lifting up one bare foot to demonstrate what remained of the beach between her toes.
âDonât move!â Dan pretended to look shocked. âYou canât walk through the house like that. I donât want sand everywhere! Iâll carry you.â
âDan, no! I mean, do you really think you should?â
He raised one eyebrow. âI always used to carry you. As I recall, youâre as light as a feather.â
Before she could protest heâd scooped her up into his arms. âYou havenât put on any weight at all.â
She laughed. âYes, but youâre older than you were, donât forget. All this he-man stuff is for younger men.â
âNonsense! Stop trying to demolish my ego! Anyway, not yet forty. I work out at the gymâ¦run on the beach when I can find the timeâ¦â
He was walking quickly through the sitting room with her in his arms, towards the hall and then up the stairs, as if to prove the point.
He was just so fabulously sexy when he was flexing his masculinity! She leaned her head against his chest. âIâm not complaining. Iâm loving every moment.â
Had she really dared to tell Dan that she was loving something they were doing together? The next thing she would be saying would be that she still loved him. No, that would be a step too far even for her runaway tongueâ¦even if it was trueâ¦which it wasnât, of courseâ¦Oh, why couldnât she simply enjoy the moment?
She glanced up at Dan but he was concentrating on the last step of the stairs. She gave a sigh of relief that theyâd made it. Yes, she really was loving it, trying to live for each precious moment without any thought of where they were heading emotionally. She found it so romantic to be carried upstairs again by Dan. How long had it been since that had happened? Oh, did it really matter? It was happening now and that was all she cared about.
